It is believed that the original Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot was held at the Old Fairgrounds back in the early 1940s, but the long string of consecutive years began with the eight-mile race back in 1968. The unique eight-mile distance was created when the 114 runners decked out in everything from sweat suits to swim trunks over long underwear were instructed to run along the shores of White Rock Lake "to the big oak tree and back". All participants received a certificate upon finishing the race.
Ralph Trimble of San Antonio, age 27, was the first winner. He was an Air Force psychologist at the time and won the race in 41 minutes and 59 seconds. A little known fact regarding Ralph Trimble was that his jogging companions in San Antonio at the time were a group of Air Force physicians, one by the name of Lt. Colonel Kenneth H. Cooper, the Medical Corps Officer who wrote popular paperbacks that inspired numbers of Americans to take up jogging. Tremble stated he hoped it was "not just another fad because it's a healthy thing".
By 1979, the race had become so popular that it was moved to the downtown area to accommodate more runners and to showcase "Big D". The 3 mile Fun Run/Walk was added in 1984 to accommodate the increase participation of individuals and families.
We've come a long way since that first cold, blustery day on White Rock Lake. Each year, the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot continues to grow and attract runners and walkers from all over the world. in 2009 there were 36,543 registered runners and approximately 15-20,000 spectators in attendance.
The Dallas YMCA is a community service organization and through its programs such as the Turkey Trot, hopes to promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being for all people. We wish to give a warm Thank You to all the sponsors and runners whose support benefits the YMCA teen and family programs.
